my first-year portfolio looked like a supermarket shelf
I had one dividend ETF, two tech ETFs, a clean energy ETF, three single stocks, a REIT, and a gold ETC. Account size was tiny. I told myself it was 'diversified' when really it was just clutter.
Now I'm down to one broad ETF plus one small fun position. If any other beginner is building a 9-ingredient soup with 800 bucks, maybe don't.

Exactly why beginner threads need more real-life examples and fewer slogans.

I appreciate how unromantic and useful this is.

My cousin had overlap so bad he basically owned the same big US tech names through four wrappers.

This is the sort of comment that would've calmed me down last year.

Same. fewer moving parts meant fewer bad stories later.

Did you sell everything and consolidate in one go?

Makes sense. sometimes tidying the system matters more than squeezing each sale

Pretty much over a few months. I wanted fewer moving parts more than I wanted the 'perfect' exit.

Right, and it's usually obvious only after the fact.

This is why simple is underrated. Complexity flatters the ego.

The number of times I paid for a lesson like this... whew.

This is a better beginner lesson than most books manage.

A classic starter pack. We all want to feel like mini fund managers.

That was the turning point for me too, weirdly enough.

Exactly. excitement is an expensive teacher.
