45 and behind: if you had to prioritize, what gets maxed first?

Assume this order of available buckets:
401k with match
HSA
Roth IRA
plain brokerage

We're 45, late start, combined income around 190k, no bad debt, maybe able to save 45-50k a year if we stay disciplined. Allocation today is roughly 82% stocks / 8% bonds / 10% cash.

I know the broad answer is all of it if you can, but if you were catching up aggressively, which bucket would you fill in what order?

At 45, tax diversification matters too, so I'd still want some Roth space if eligible.

My order would be: 401k to match, HSA, Roth, then back to 401k, then brokerage if you still have gas.

Also if cash is excess, that's your easiest immediate move.

Match first until the employer stops giving you free money, always.

Don't let bucket optimization distract from total savings rate. That's the engine.
