Portfolio Check · by Priya Nair · 2026-08-29

many-fund person checking in, not sorry

Counterpoint to the simplification religion: I like slicing exposures on purpose and I actually maintain it fine. No spreadsheet tears, no mystery positions.

Roth:
US total market 35%
Intl developed 15%
Emerging 8%
small-cap value 12%
quality factor 8%
REITs 7%
intermediate treasuries 10%
gold 3%

Could I survive with three funds? Sure. But many funds isn't automatically cosplay if you know what each sleeve is doing.

This is the best defense of complexity: you can explain every slice without hand waving.

The orbit tends to flatten every nuanced portfolio into either genius or clutter.

I don't want to do this, but I respect people who do it intentionally.

Agreed. The problem isn't fund count, it's random accumulation.

Exactly. Intentional complexity exists.

Thank you. I feel like people hear 8 funds and picture raccoons in a filing cabinet.
