an undergrad ruined a run, owned it immediately, and weirdly restored my faith in mentoring

They mixed up two labels and a full afternoon's samples became trash. Brutal. But instead of hiding it or doing the weird half-confession dance, they came straight to me with notes, timeline, and exactly where they think it went wrong. Still expensive. Still annoying. Also exactly the kind of honesty that makes somebody trainable.

The mistake hurts. The honesty saves so much secondary damage.

Also means they felt safe enough to tell you immediately, which says something nice about the lab.

I tell students this all the time: bad news ages like milk.

Trying to build exactly that vibe. Not always succeeding, but trying

That's a future good scientist right there.
