Portfolio Check · by Emir Kaya · 2026-08-31

Do you rebalance by calendar or by drift?

39, long horizon, regular retirement goal. Portfolio target is 75/15/10. I currently rebalance once a year because monthly checking turns my brain into soup, but I'm wondering if waiting for a 5% drift rule makes more sense.

Current actual split after the recent run:
- 79% equities
- 11% bonds
- 10% cash

How do you all do it in real life, not in elegant spreadsheet theory?

That last rule is nice and simple, thank you

Once a year because my laziness is one of my best investing traits.

If you're at 79/11/10 instead of 75/15/10 I personally would not be sprinting to fix that.

Calendar plus threshold. I check quarterly, act only if it's meaningfully off.

Real life answer: when contributions can't fix it anymore.
