grandma left me gold coins and now I have an allocation problem

This is half sentimental post, half portfolio math. My grandma left me a small envelope of gold coins plus a note that basically said banks get weird. Melt value is roughly 14k from what I can tell.

Financial portfolio otherwise:
401k 166k target date
Roth 41k index funds
brokerage 23k total market
cash 12k

So the coins are meaningful enough to matter, not meaningful enough to retire on. Do I count this as part of my gold allocation and keep it, or sell and simplify?

Count it if you keep it. Hidden allocations are still allocations.

Sell enough to get to the allocation you want, keep one or two as family artifacts.

That might be the middle path. She definitely would've approved of a middle path with snacks.

I'd probably keep at least a couple for sentimental reasons and not over-financialize the whole thing.

If the note says banks get weird, I am keeping one coin forever.
