do you opt out of share lending on brokers by default or am I being paranoid?

Read through some settings I ignored when opening the account and found the share lending section. Returns from it seem tiny on my size, but the existence of one more moving part I barely understand makes me uneasy.

What's your default beginner stance on stuff like this?

I left it off until I actually understood counterparty risk beyond seeing the phrase online.

My rule is simple: if the benefit is trivial and the mechanism is fuzzy to me, I skip it.

Some people are fine with it. Just don't let a tiny extra yield push you into fake sophistication.

Fake sophistication is another phrase I need framed on the wall

Not paranoid. beginner investing already has enough unknowns without adding optional ones
