Board Games · by Brave Atlas · 2026-09-02

best 2-player game for a spouse who says they "don't like board games" but loved Azul?

Need something with a nice table presence, simple teach, and not too much direct meanness. They enjoy puzzly turns but hate feeling trapped for 45 minutes by a bad opening.

Current shortlist is Patchwork, Cascadia, and me overthinking this.

Patchwork is the usual gateway for a reason.

Whatever you choose, teach while setting up. Formal rules speeches are where enthusiasm goes to die.

My non-gamer partner adored Jaipur because turns are quick and the rules fit in a spoon.

Cascadia if they liked Azul's calmness more than the hate drafting.

It was definitely the calmness. They do not enjoy being "gotcha'd" at home
