what do you do when a senior beagle refuses renal food on principle

We caught kidney issues early-ish, which is good. The bad part is that my 12-year-old beagle thinks prescription renal food is a personal insult. He will skip a meal and then dramatically inhale the cat's ordinary food if I blink. Yes I'm talking to my vet, just curious what got stubborn old hounds over the hump.

Guard the cat food like it's national infrastructure.

Warming it slightly helped mine. Smell matters a lot with the bland renal stuff.

Prescription diets are not all equally palatable. Definitely ask about alternatives before you lose your mind.

This thread is giving me hope that he isn't uniquely dramatic. thank you

Ask your vet if you can try different textures/brands. The first one we got was a hard no, the canned version was acceptable.

My old beagle would rather starve than be mildly inconvenienced. So I feel this.

We mixed in tiny approved toppers for a week and tapered down. Wouldn't do it without vet blessing but it got us started.
