self-watering gadgets: actually useful or just cute plastic lies

I keep getting ads for globes, spikes, little owl things, all of it. Curious whether anyone here genuinely uses them or if they mostly create mush.

Depends on substrate more than the gadget. Chunky mix = maybe. Dense nursery soil = swamp.
