how much birthday party chaos is considered normal now

My son is turning 8. Last year one kid cried because the pizza was touching the fruit tray, one vanished into the coat closet with three glow sticks, and another threw up from sprinting immediately after cake. Other parents acted like this was standard. Is it??

That is honestly a pretty average 8-year-old party in my experience.

Some kids melt down, some kids overrun the sugar budget, one kid is always strangely damp. That's the ecosystem.

Normal enough, yes. But fewer activities can help. Unstructured plus sugar is a bold recipe.

'one kid is always strangely damp' made me feel SEEN

The coat closet/glow stick combo is almost poetic.

If nobody needed stitches and the venue didn't bill you extra, I'd call it a win.
