Lost my phone and suddenly understood why people yell about backups

Dropped my phone getting out of an Uber, screen died, and for a few hours I couldn't get into my exchange app or authenticator. Eventually recovered everything, but that stretch between 'ugh' and 'oh no' aged me like six years.

If you're new: please sort out backups before life picks the lesson for you.

Did you use app backup or old school printed codes?

Printed codes for one account, cloud backup for another. Messy system but it saved me

I had a phone stolen on vacation. Recovering accounts from a hotel lobby was an extreme character-building event.

People obsess over seed phrases and then totally ignore 2FA recovery. Same category of problem.

This is why I keep backup codes in a boring folder with other boring important stuff.
