explain staking to me like i'm 12

I get the super vague version that you lock coins and maybe earn more coins, but every time I try to read about staking my eyes glaze over halfway through the third new term.

I mostly hold BTC, a little ETH, and one or two other things from my learning phase. What should a beginner understand before touching staking at all?

Big questions: can you unstake anytime, who controls the coins, and what can go wrong if the platform fails?

BTC doesn't have staking in the same way, so if someone is pitching you 'btc staking' I'd read the fine print twice.

Beginner version: you're accepting rules and risks in exchange for yield. The risks part matters more than the yield ad.

Also some staking isn't really native staking, it's an exchange product wrapped in a friendly button.

The 12-year-old version is 'you lend convenience to a system and get paid, but only if you understand the catch'

Honestly that helped more than the article I read this morning
