market swings make me slightly sick. is that just a sign i own too much stock?

I started with the classic 'long-term investor' speech to myself, but when my balance moves around more than I expected, my mood does too. Not ruin-my-day bad, but enough to notice.

Do you interpret that as 'stay the course until you toughen up' or 'your allocation is wrong for your actual nerves'?

Could be both. Sometimes you need time, sometimes you need more cash buffer.

If you're skipping meals over a normal correction, that's data.
