Portfolio Check · by Grace Parker · 2026-09-04

what does 1% BTC even do for a portfolio besides start arguments?

Every time crypto comes up, the compromise answer is 'just keep 1%.' Genuine question: is 1% actually meaningful, or is it portfolio parsley so people can say they have exposure?

Mine right now is basically:
US index 62%
Intl 23%
Bonds 10%
REITs 3%
BTC 1%
gold 1%

If the thesis is asymmetric upside, cool, but 1% feels more emotional than mathematical.

Counterpoint: if you need a decoy allocation to manage your feelings, fine. But let's at least call it that.

'Portfolio parsley' is brutal and accurate

stealing that phrase for group chat

It's mostly behavioral. 1% keeps you from FOMO-buying 12% later.

Depends on portfolio size. 1% of 40k is a hobby. 1% of 3 million is not nothing.

I started at 0.5%. It was enough that I paid attention and learned without blowing up anything.
