Portfolio Check · by Minji Kim · 2026-09-07

Inherited money and now I'm weirdly scared to invest it

44 years old. I received roughly 230k after a family death and it has been sitting in cash for months because I freeze every time I think about moving it. Existing portfolio before that was about 190k and looked like:
- 75% equity index funds
- 15% bonds
- 10% cash

Goal is regular retirement plus maybe helping my kids a bit later. Risk tolerance used to be medium-high. With inherited money it suddenly feels different, like making a mistake would be disrespectful somehow.

Write an allocation policy first, then move according to the policy instead of the mood.

You don't have to invest it all in one ugly dramatic day.

This is super common. It stops feeling like 'money' and starts feeling like a museum piece.

Museum piece is exactly the feeling, wow

I inherited less than that and still stalled for half a year. No shame.
