Portfolio Check · by Daniela Torres · 2026-09-13

Anyone here actually happy holding intermediate bonds in the 2020s?

46 years old, retirement maybe in 14-16 years. Risk tolerance medium. I understand the role of bonds intellectually, but emotionally I still see them as the section of my portfolio that exists to disappoint me politely.

Allocation:
- 65% global equities
- 20% intermediate bond fund
- 10% short-term bond fund
- 5% cash

People who hold a real bond allocation: do you feel better for it, or do you just accept it like flossing?

Like flossing is exactly it.

Tool not joy might be the sticker I put on that fund

Intermediate bonds stopped looking stupid the second I got close enough to care about drawdowns.

They are a tool, not a source of joy.

I feel better when stocks are puking and my bonds are merely being boring.
