52 and wondering if I should stop trying to beat the market with side bets

Main portfolio is pretty sensible. The issue is I keep carving out 'small' satellite positions that somehow multiply. Age 52, retirement goal around 63. Risk tolerance medium.

Current allocation:
- 58% broad equity funds
- 12% factor/thematic side bets
- 20% bonds
- 10% cash

The side bets aren't destroying me, but they are definitely occupying way more brain space than 12% deserves. Did any of you just... quit trying to be clever at some point?

That ratio is why index funds keep winning despite being boring.

Yes. I got older and realized cleverness was charging management fees in my head.

12% of assets and 60% of attention is painfully accurate

12% of assets, 60% of attention. classic.

I didn't quit being clever. I quarantined it to 5% and stopped pretending it was strategy.
