Today I Learned · by Aisha Jacobs · 2026-09-02

The practical joy of doing the setup badly at first for absolute beginners

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 4 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the tiny repair for a while.

Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Today I Learned feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

I think the bad version of this advice causes a lot of frustration. This is more useful on a tired rainy evening than on a perfect day.

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. The 8-minute rule is underrated. Glad you shared the messy version too.

Maybe, but the tradeoff seems bigger than the post suggests. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. My friend tried it in Cairo and had the opposite result.
