how are regular people tracking taxes without going insane

General question, not asking for legal advice. I barely did anything complicated and I still feel like my transaction history became a bowl of spaghetti the second I moved coins between places.

Do most casual holders just keep a spreadsheet from day one? I can already tell future me is going to be mad at present me.

Keep exports too. Exchanges don't always keep the same interface forever.
