Portfolio Check · by Avery Johnson · 2026-09-18

58, aiming to stop full-time work in about 7 years. sanity check?

Age 58. Goal is part-time consulting at 65, not full beach retirement. Horizon for this money is still long because my family tends to live forever. Risk tolerance: medium. Big losses would mess with my sleep.

Portfolio:
- 45% world equity ETF
- 20% dividend/value stocks ETF
- 25% intermediate bond fund
- 10% cash

Rough amount is just under 840k. I keep wondering if 25% bonds is too little, then I read someone saying bonds are dead and I ignore my own common sense.

Your sentence about living forever made me laugh because same. The long retirement horizon gets ignored a lot.

I'd maybe hold less dividend tilting and more plain bonds, but that's preference.

For seven years out, 25% bonds doesn't strike me as wild at all.

Exactly. I need the portfolio to be useful, not exciting

People saying bonds are dead usually mean they personally got bored.
