Stock Talk · by Sara Hosseini · 2026-09-19

UBER was the first stock that made me understand why GAAP and 'real business progress' can fight each other

I stayed away for years because the old story felt like subsidized rides and promises. Then the operating leverage started showing up, the platform got more durable than I expected, and I had to admit I was anchored to a stale thesis.

Not saying it's bulletproof. Just saying some stories mature while your old jokes about them expire.

Totally fair. It's not a no-risk compounder, just more real than I gave it credit for.

Network effects plus scale eventually stopped looking theoretical.

Same here. I kept waiting for it to prove everything in one quarter instead of noticing the trend.

My biggest regret is understanding the business better only after the stock already taught the class.

Anchored to a stale thesis is one of the most expensive habits in this hobby.
