63 and everyone tells me I need way more bonds than this

Age 63, hoping to retire in 3-4 years. Risk tolerance is lower than it used to be, but going too conservative scares me too because inflation still exists.

Current allocation:
- 50% global stock funds
- 20% bond funds
- 20% cash / short-term deposits
- 10% REIT fund

Portfolio is around 1.1m. Every rule of thumb says I should be much heavier in bonds by now. Are people actually doing that, or do those rules just survive because they rhyme?

I'm 61 and 35% bonds. Couldn't do more without feeling like I was locking in mediocrity.

The REIT slice is equity risk wearing a property hat, just keep that in mind.

Age rules are cute until they meet real humans.

'because they rhyme' is exactly how half of finance advice survives

Stealing that line

20% cash plus 20% bonds already gives you a decent safety buffer.
