Portfolio Check · by Chloe Davis · 2026-09-22

33 and still no bonds. reckless or normal?

Age 33. Horizon 25+ years. Goal is retirement plus optional career break in my 40s if possible. Risk tolerance: I thought high, but I did refresh my app too much in the last selloff.

Current allocation:
- 85% global equity ETFs
- 10% small cap value ETF
- 5% cash

No bonds at all. Portfolio roughly 205k. Am I overthinking this because social media suddenly rediscovered bonds, or am I missing a useful stabilizer?

5% cash isn't nothing. You're not fully feral.

I added bonds at 35 purely because I was tired of pretending volatility didn't affect me.

'not fully feral' feels like the flair I deserve

If you want a career break in your 40s, that goal argues for at least some safer assets eventually.

Normal? yes. Mandatory? no. But useful is a different question.
