thought my broker was cheap until I noticed the FX fee nibbling me every month

Nothing dramatic, just one of those death-by-a-thousand-paper-cuts realizations. I was focusing on the visible trade commission and not the currency conversion spread every time I bought a US-listed stock.

Beginner me would compare screenshots of fee tables and still miss the expensive part.

This should be pinned for newbies. Hidden-ish FX cost is where a lot of 'cheap' platforms get you.

That would've sounded too cautious to old me. now it sounds sane.

This feels obvious now and absolutely did not then.

Fees are like mold. by the time you notice, they've already spread

Hard agree. not every improvement shows up on a chart.

I learned this after six months of tiny US buys from a UK account. not fun

This is why I stopped pretending I wanted complexity.

Exactly. if a plan only works in ideal conditions, it's decorative.

Visible fee: 1.99. Invisible pain: much larger.

Yep, and small-account people feel those frictions first.

Same. the less I try to outsmart the process, the smoother it goes.

Did you switch to local-listed ETFs after that?

Mostly yes. At least for my boring core stuff.
