sold my index fund in the dip last year and I still feel stupid about it
I started investing near the end of a good run, saw my account go red a few months later, convinced myself I was being 'disciplined', and sold. Then I spent six months waiting for a lower entry that never really came.
Posting because beginner mistakes always get written like cute little lessons. This one actually felt awful. If you're new and you panic, you're not uniquely broken, but wow it is expensive tuition.

Respect for posting it. Most people only post their 'lesson learned' after they're back in profit lol

Exactly. people underrate how much mental load costs.

Same here. the first version of my plan had way too much ego in it.

The cost of learning 'I am more emotional than I thought' is brutal.

True, and it's rarely the fee you notice first that does the damage.

I did the exact same thing in 2022. Sat in cash feeling clever while my monthly purchases would've fixed the whole problem.

I learned that the simple option feels smarter after a rough month, not before.

Right, and the calmer answer is often the repeatable one.

What made you hit sell? News, amount down, or just seeing red every day?

Honestly just the daily red and doom videos. I didn't have rules so I invented some on the spot.

This is such a practical way to frame it.

That'll do it. muting finance content helped me more than any book

Yep, and it matters even more when the account is still small.

Not financial advice etc but this is why automating buys saved me from myself.

My beginner brain hated hearing this, but it was still right.

That's the voice I needed in my head a year ago.

If it helps, one bad sell early can turn into a very good habit later. I now have a 48-hour rule before touching anything.

That line alone would've saved me a couple of silly trades.

I had to learn this twice before it stuck.
