Portfolio Check · by Rafael Almeida · 2026-09-29

keep inherited dividend names or just sell and buy total market?

I inherited a basket from my dad: JNJ, KO, PG, XOM, T, a regional bank, and a utility. About 119k total now. My own accounts are mostly simple index funds.

Part of me wants to leave it alone for sentimental reasons. Part of me knows Dad wasn't constructing a masterwork, he just liked checks showing up. Has anyone here kept an inherited dividend portfolio intact for a while, or did you rip the band-aid off and consolidate?

You can honor him without also keeping AT&T.

I kept my mom's positions for a year, then sold in stages. Needed the emotional buffer.

Maybe keep one or two names that feel meaningful and simplify the rest?

Sentiment is real, but don't let the portfolio become a shrine you have to maintain forever.

Dad liked checks showing up describes an entire generation

It really does. He would've booed my total-market lecture halfway through.
