rescue contract says I must return the dog to them, not rehome myself. is that normal?

Reading adoption paperwork for a cattle-dog-shaped project and saw a clause saying if I ever can't keep him, he has to go back to the rescue. No selling, no private placement, no giving to family. Part of me gets it because they don't want dogs bounced around. Part of me wonders how enforceable or practical that is years later.

We signed one and later returned a dog after my dad died. Rescue honored it and helped a lot, so I became a believer.

Read whether they actually have space/obligation if you're in crisis. The wording matters.

Practicality varies, but philosophically I understand it.

That said, some rescues wield those clauses like ego instead of support.

It protects the dog from ending up on Craigslist next to a used lawnmower.

Very normal. A lot of rescues want right of first refusal forever.
