Portfolio Check · by Quiet Rider · 2026-09-29

59, spouse retiring before me, so our portfolio suddenly has two timelines

I'm 59, spouse is 62 and likely done next year. I work a little longer. That has made our allocation conversations much more interesting.

Combined portfolio target now:
- 50% equities
- 30% bonds
- 20% cash / near-term spending

Before this we were closer to 65/25/10. Risk tolerance medium, maybe medium-low for the household once one income disappears. Anyone else deal with staggered retirements without overcorrecting into fear?

Two timelines absolutely changes the vibe even if the math only changes a bit.

Please do. Finance deserves more annoying catchphrases.

I wouldn't call that overcorrection. More like acknowledging sequence risk entered the chat.

We did a similar shift when my wife retired first. The extra cash bought us emotional smoothness.

'sequence risk entered the chat' is going to annoy my spouse because I'll say it all week
