Portfolio Check · by Amina Okafor · 2026-10-01

61, can I still justify 50% stocks if retirement is basically around the corner?

Age 61, likely retiring at 64. Risk tolerance medium. Total portfolio around 1.25m.

Current allocation:
- 50% equities
- 30% bonds
- 20% cash

Some friends act like 50% stocks is outrageous this close to retirement. But if retirement could last 30 years, going too low scares me too. Curious how other people in their 60s think about this.

50% stocks at 61 is not outrageous in a 30-year retirement scenario.

I retired at 62 with 45% stocks and wish I'd maybe kept a touch more.

Context is everything. Spending needs, flexibility, pensions if any, all that.

Good reminder that there isn't one holy number

The cash and bonds matter too. People hear the stock number and stop listening.
