Stock Talk · by Maya Putri · 2026-10-02

my dad says dividends are “real money” and index gains are just paper. how do you even argue with that?

Not trying to win a family fight, just curious how people think about this. He started investing way before me and loves stocks that pay cash regularly. I started with broad ETFs and he keeps saying at least his companies 'pay him to wait'.

I know total return is the broader idea, but I also get why the cash feels tangible.

My uncle says the same thing and honestly the psychological comfort is worth something, just not everything.

Exactly. process problems masquerade as market problems all the time.

'Pay him to wait' is a powerful phrase though, I'll give him that.

Right? It's annoyingly persuasive.

I stopped debating and just compare outcomes every few years. quieter life

Same here, except I learned it with a dividend stock instead of a fund.

You probably don't argue him out of it. Different generations got attached to different signals.

Honestly, I think a lot of people need permission to keep it simple.

Dividends are real money. So is selling 0.7% of a fund if needed. The market doesn't care which wrapper your cash arrived in.

The moment I understood this, half my portfolio ideas went in the bin.
