Portfolio Check · by Maya Putri · 2026-10-02

tech-heavy because my paycheck is already tech-heavy, yes I know

I work at a midsize software company and get RSUs. So obviously the sensible thing would be to keep my personal portfolio broad, right? Anyway here's my accidental monster:

401k: target date, fine
brokerage: QQQ 31%, semiconductor ETF 14%, NVDA 8%, VTI 27%, VXUS 10%, cash 10%

Nothing catastrophic, but when I step back it feels like my salary, bonus, and investing all lean on the same part of the economy not having a bad year at the same time.

This is one of those risks that feels abstract until layoffs happen in your Slack channels.

The salary/bonus/portfolio triple-stack is the real issue here

Exactly. If my job gets weird I don't want my brokerage to join in for the bit.

I work in semis and cap my sector exposure on purpose now. Learned the hard way.

Your human capital is already a giant tech ETF, yes.

At least you're aware. A lot of people call it conviction when it's just overlap.
