45, two kids, retirement account makes me want to stare at a wall
Numbers because hiding hasn't helped:
401k 142k
old IRA 31k
wife 403b 54k
cash 18k
no pension coming
We're both 45. Household income about 168k in a MCOL area. Started over after a business face-planted in my 30s and then daycare ate the next decade. Current allocation across everything is roughly 78% stock / 12% bonds / 10% cash.
Some days I feel motivated, some days I feel like the game is half over and I'm jogging onto the field late.

I didn't really get serious until 43. Progress feels slower because regret is loud.

People who never restarted after a failed business won't understand how exhausting it is. Respect for posting the numbers.

I needed this thread. I'm 47 and have similar numbers, just less courage to type them out.

Appreciate this. I'm trying to replace shame with math, one ugly paragraph at a time.

168k income means the shovel matters now. The next 15-20 years can still move a lot.

Also, 10% cash isn't some moral failure if life has been chaotic.

You're not early, obviously, but you're also not done. Big difference.

Can you raise savings rate without feeling punished? That's the lever I'd stare at first.
