Is it rude to leave a group chat without explanation?

This group was for a weekend cabin trip in May. The trip happened. It is now October and people are still firing off memes, side convos, and one guy's fantasy football pain. I muted it months ago. If I leave, am I making a statement I don't mean?

On iPhone the dramatic little system message is the only reason this feels rude. In reality everybody forgets in 40 seconds.

It really is the digital equivalent of knocking over a chair on the way out.

the system message is exactly what's haunting me

Archive forever is also a valid religion.

Depends who started it. If it's your aunt, yes. If it's Dave from accounting, no.

I usually drop a 'muting/leaving so I stop missing my actual texts, love yall' and bounce.

Silent leave is fine if it's more than like 8 people. At that size nobody can morally demand attendance.
