Portfolio Check · by Noah Miller · 2026-10-04

Trying for FIRE by my mid 40s, tell me where I'm fooling myself

35 now. Goal is not zero work, more like optional work by 46-47. Horizon is technically long because I'd need this to last decades. Risk tolerance: high-ish, but I don't want to cosplay being fearless.

Current split:
- 75% global equity index funds
- 10% small cap value ETF
- 5% bond fund
- 5% cash
- 5% crypto

Rough portfolio size 410k, savings rate around 42%. My blind spot is probably that I keep assuming future me will be okay with more volatility than present me really is.

42% savings rate is the actual hero here.

Yeah, I spent hours on asset allocation and like 15 minutes on future spending. not ideal

I'd cut crypto before I cut stocks if the goal is optionality.

The portfolio is fine. The part to stress test is your spending assumptions.

A lot of FIRE plans break because people want certainty on an early-retirement timeline. Those two things fight each other.
