what's a realistic emergency fund for a dog now

Five years ago I used to hear 'keep 1k tucked away.' After one ER visit and one weird rash month that sounds almost cute. For a medium healthy adult dog in a city, what number lets you sleep a little better without pretending you're fully protected from chaos?

This thread is depressing but useful.

'fully protected from chaos' should be the subtitle of dog ownership

I couldn't save fast enough so I did insurance early. Different tool, same anxiety.

I aim for 5k cash + care credit + insurance. No single layer feels sufficient anymore.

We keep 3k and insurance. That combo has saved my blood pressure.

Emergency funds are less about covering everything and more about buying decision space.

Depends wildly on region, but 1k is now basically the cost of opening the ER door and making eye contact.

If you have a brachy breed or a senior, I'd want more than for a random healthy mutt-type energy ball.
