leveled the shelf perfectly and then realized the ceiling is the crooked part

Spent my whole Sunday fussing with anchors in a 1950s apartment because the shelf looked wrong. Turns out the shelf is level. The ceiling line above it is just wandering off on its own journey, so my eye keeps accusing the shelf anyway. Home ownership seems to be 40% fixing things and 60% discovering geometry lies.

If you make it level with the ceiling it will be functionally wrong but emotionally right.
