home lab logging stack that isnt miserable to maintain?

Not enterprise scale, just a handful of boxes, firewall, some containers, maybe a cloud VM later. I want enough visibility to practice detections and catch dumb mistakes, but I do not want my hobby setup to become a second unpaid job. What have people settled on?

Monitoring for the monitoring is exactly the spiral I'm trying to avoid

Graylog was a decent middle ground for me. Not sexy, just usable.

Pick sources first, stack second. A lot of pain is shipping garbage you never inspect.

Keep it boring. Syslog + something searchable beats a frankenstack you resent.

I overbuilt mine and now the monitoring for the monitoring has monitoring.
