If AI coding assistants write 80% of your code in 5 years, what skill becomes your actual job?

Genuinely curious what the community thinks here. System design? Reviewing/judging AI output? Understanding business requirements? Or does 'programmer' just become a different job title entirely?

taste. knowing what good architecture looks like and catching subtly wrong decisions before they compound, thats the scarce skill

this exactly, taste is underrated and hard to teach

honestly i think debugging becomes even MORE valuable, someone has to untangle the ai's confident mistakes

requirements gathering and talking to actual humans about what they need, ai cant do that part yet and i dont think it will soon

security review. ai generated code has subtle vulnerabilities that need a trained eye to catch

i think the job just becomes 'product thinking' with code as an implementation detail, similar to how compilers abstracted assembly

Avery Johnson · 0 likes

good analogy, nobody mourns writing assembly by hand anymore

performance optimization at scale, ai is decent at average case code but bad at knowing when something needs to be genuinely clever

honestly kind of scared tbh, feels like the floor for entry level engineers is rising fast and thats rough for new grads

testing and verification. someone still has to define what 'correct' even means for the system
