Why does every AI agent demo look amazing but fall apart the moment you give it a real messy task?

Genuinely asking. Ive tried half a dozen agent frameworks for things like 'research this topic and compile a report' and they all do fine on the happy path then spiral into weird loops or hallucinate sources the second the task has any ambiguity. Is this a fundamental limitation right now or am I just doing something wrong with prompting/tooling?

its mostly a fundamental limitation imo, the error accumulation over multi step tasks is still really hard to control

try adding explicit verification steps between actions, dramatically reduces the spiral behavior in my experience

demos are cherry picked by definition, nobody posts the 50 failed runs that happened before the good one

the source hallucination thing specifically gets better if you force it to quote exact text before citing, forces grounding

i had better luck breaking the task into much smaller explicit subtasks rather than trusting the agent to plan its own steps

this is literally my day job right now and yeah, ambiguity tolerance is the single biggest gap between demo and production

have you tried giving it a 'give up and ask for clarification' escape hatch? helped me a ton with infinite loops

agents work great for narrow well defined tools, broad open ended research tasks are still rough across the board

the gap between demo and prod for agents might be the most consistent theme in ai this year honestly
