Self custody horror story: lost access to a hardware wallet seed phrase stored only in my head — lessons for everyone else

Memorized my seed phrase years ago thinking it was more secure than writing it down, then had a medical event that affected my memory temporarily. Got it back eventually but it was genuinely terrifying for a few weeks. Please use a proper metal backup, memory is not a secure storage medium no matter how confident you are.

glad you got it back, this is a genuinely important warning, memory is not immune to accidents, illness, or just normal aging

metal seed backups feel like overkill until this exact scenario happens to you or someone you know, cheap insurance for a life changing amount of money for some people

shamir backup / splitting the seed across multiple locations is worth looking into too, no single point of failure whether physical or memory based

this is why 'not your keys not your coins' purists sometimes forget the flip side, self custody comes with real responsibility and real risk if done carelessly

appreciate you sharing something this personal to help others avoid the same scare, this is the kind of post that actually helps people

multisig setups solve this specific failure mode well, worth the extra complexity for larger holdings imo

had a similar scare with a fire that almost got my paper backup, moved to a fireproof metal plate immediately after, dont wait for the scare like i did
