How do you explain to non-technical friends/family why crypto isn't 'just a scam' without sounding defensive?

Every family gathering someone brings up a crypto scam story they read about and lumps the whole space together with it. I think there's legitimate tech and legitimate scams both and it's exhausting trying to explain the distinction without coming across as a crypto bro defending everything. How do you all navigate this?

i stopped trying to defend 'crypto' as a monolith entirely and just talk about specific concrete things, like 'this specific remittance use case saved my friend money', much easier conversation

acknowledging the scams upfront and explicitly before talking about legitimate uses actually makes people listen more, denying the scam problem exists makes you sound exactly like the people theyre worried about

honestly sometimes the right move is just not engaging, some people have made up their mind and a thanksgiving dinner isnt going to change it

i compare it to the early internet, tons of scams AND genuine useful technology coexisting, usually lands better than a direct defense of crypto specifically

the framing that helped most for me: separate 'is the technology interesting' from 'should you personally invest', those are different conversations entirely

my family stopped bringing it up once i stopped getting defensive about it honestly, the energy you bring to the conversation matters as much as the content
