Are small local models finally good enough for daily coding work?

I've been running a 14B model locally for autocomplete and quick refactors for two weeks. It handles boilerplate fine but falls apart on multi-file reasoning. Where is your cutoff between local and hosted?

As someone who does this for a living, the biggest cost with local coding models is the stuff nobody puts in the demo

agree mostly, though not for every case

cost vs benefit matters here, we ran numbers on local coding models and the payoff came later than expected

My manager read one article on local coding models and now it's our whole roadmap lol

We tried local coding models last quarter, worked great for small stuff, got messy at scale!

fair, but I'd still try it once

Would love to see actual data on local coding models instead of vibes. Anyone have links

we saw the opposite honestly

Local coding models sound simple until you try them with real constraints.

can you share what you changed

Good point, didn't think of that

I'm more of an enthusiast than a pro, but local coding models have been fun to tinker with on weekends :)

Is anyone else tired of the hype around local coding models, feels like every other post is about it!
