WSJ: Anthropic posted a net loss of over \$80B in H1 2026

reuters.com

Reuters, citing the WSJ, reports that Anthropic recorded a net loss of more than \$80 billion in the first half of this year. That's an enormous number even by AI industry standards, though it's not clear from the headline how much is cash burn versus accounting items. How long can frontier AI labs keep losing money at this scale before something has to give?

investors must have a very long time horizon on this

I'd really want to know how much of that is non-cash. headline net loss can include all sorts of accounting stuff

this is the key question. net loss and cash burn are very different animals

the enterprise side is where the money has to come from eventually

80 billion in six months. I can't even picture that number

it's like a few hundred million a day roughly, which somehow makes it worse

Wonder how this compares to the other labs, they probably aren't far off

hard to say without their numbers but I'd guess similar order of magnitude for the big ones

compute isn't cheap and everyone's in an arms race. not surprising, just big

the arms race framing is right. nobody can afford to slow down first

people said that about cloud too and it worked out for the big players

some bubbles leave useful infrastructure behind though
