DHS order bans DeepSeek from federal civilian agency IT systems

reuters.com

A new DHS order bars DeepSeek from IT systems at US federal civilian agencies. Several individual agencies and states had already restricted it, but this looks like a broader formal step. The open question for me is what 'DeepSeek' covers here: the hosted app and API are an obvious data concern, but locally hosted open weights are a very different thing. Does anyone know how orders like this usually treat self-hosted open models, and do you expect private companies to follow?

my company copied the agency guidance last time something like this happened, legal moves fast when the government gives them cover

compliance teams love a precedent

meanwhile half the 'american' open models people run are finetunes on top of chinese base models lol

provenance tracking for model weights is going to be a whole industry

reading the coverage it's not even clear to me if this is new rules or formalizing existing bans. anyone with an actual gov it background?

from what I've seen these orders tend to consolidate a patchwork of agency level rules, but I'd wait for the actual text

curious how contractors are affected. lots of gov work is done on contractor systems not agency ones

good point, the line between agency system and contractor laptop is blurry

this is going to be fun for anyone who built internal tools on deepseek because it was cheap

cheap was always going to have a catch

banning the app and api makes sense to me. sending government data to servers you don't control was never going to fly

yeah that part is the least controversial thing imaginable

the weights question is the whole ballgame. if they ban running open weights on air gapped boxes thats pure politics, not security

Finn Brown · 8 likes

not entirely, people do worry about backdoored behavior baked into weights. hard to audit a giant matrix

sure but that argument applies to every model from every lab then

Not surprised. I'd be more surprised if this didn't happen at some point

yeah this was always a matter of when
