Finally moving my sats off the exchange. Hardware wallet or multisig for a normie?

I've been meaning to do this for ages and finally committed this week. My stack isn't huge, but it's enough that losing it would really sting. I keep reading that multisig is the gold standard, but I'm worried I'll overcomplicate it and lock myself out. For someone who isn't super technical, would you start with a single hardware wallet or go straight to multisig?

had to be said at least once in the thread

Buy the device directly from the manufacturer, never from a random marketplace seller

and check the packaging, though the real protection is generating the seed yourself on the device

Whatever you pick, do a test restore with a small amount BEFORE you move everything. people skip this and regret it

multisig for a normie is how you end up with three devices and no idea which seed goes where

label everything. LABEL EVERYTHING

Honestly for a modest stack a hardware wallet plus a passphrase is a nice middle ground

passphrase is great but only if you'll actually remember it. forgetting it is the same as losing the seed

Start with a single hardware wallet. Learn the backup and restore process properly first, then think about multisig later if your stack grows

this is the right order. complexity is its own risk

Did exactly this, moved to multisig about a year later once I understood what I was doing

Seed phrase on metal, not paper. paper burns, floods, gets thrown out by a helpful relative

my mum almost recycled mine once. now it lives in a very boring looking box

one thing nobody tells you: think about inheritance. if something happens to you can your family recover it?

wrote a simple letter with instructions, not the seed itself. felt weirdly emotional doing it

this is the part I keep putting off tbh
