Girlfriend wants to merge finances after a year of living together. Too soon?

My girlfriend and I have lived together for about a year and things are genuinely good. She brought up merging our finances last week and I froze a bit, not because I don't trust her, just because it feels like a big step before marriage. We earn different amounts and have pretty different spending habits. Is a year too soon, or is there a middle ground people use?

contribute proportionally to income instead of 50/50. made a big difference when my partner earned less

proportional felt way fairer for us too

different spending habits is the real thing to talk about. merged or not that'll come up eventually

accounts dont fix habits, talking does

this. my ex and I fought about money while having totally separate accounts

Freezing is a normal reaction. doesnt mean anything is wrong, just tell her you need a bit of time to think

and actually come back to it, dont let it hang forever

It's not too soon if you talk about it properly. it IS too soon if you just do it without discussing goals and habits

the conversation matters more than the timeline

we merged after 8 months and it was fine but we're both pretty boring with money lol

boring with money is a love language

Not married = less legal protection if it goes wrong. not romantic but worth knowing

yeah, depends a lot on where you live too. worth reading up on

Yours, mine, ours. joint account for rent and bills, keep your own for everything else. been doing it 5 years

same setup, zero money fights since

this is the answer for most people imo

Ask her why she wants it. might be about feeling like a team rather than the money itself

good point, sometimes it's symbolic
