Japan launches spacecraft to Mars' moons to bring back Phobos soil samples

JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration mission is on its way to Phobos, aiming to collect samples and return them to Earth. If successful it could settle whether Phobos and Deimos are captured asteroids or debris from an impact on Mars. JAXA's sample-return track record (Hayabusa 1 & 2) is impressive

captured asteroid vs impact debris is a fun mystery, I'm team impact debris

the spectra look asteroid-like but the orbits fit impact better, its genuinely unclear

Mars sample return from NASA is a budget mess so phobos samples might come back first
