How can a black hole 'split in two'?

space.com

New research says black holes can split but only at extreme spin speeds. I thought nothing could escape a black hole. How does splitting even work without breaking the rules?

from what I understand it's a theoretical result from simulations, not something observed yet

splitting doesnt require anything escaping the horizon, the horizon itself changes shape

ok that's both clearer and more confusing at the same time
