Do dogs actually feel guilty, or are we reading the 'guilty look' wrong?

Saw an article today about whether dogs feel guilt. Most research says the 'guilty face' is actually a response to our tone and body language, not them knowing they did wrong. But my dog literally hides BEFORE I find the chewed shoe. What's your experience?

Mine hides before I find it too. I think they learned that 'shoe on floor + human coming home = bad times'. association not guilt
